![]() Obviously, a potential criminal will not rob a person in a well-lighted street in front of police officers because risks of being detained and get punished for the crime are evident and too high so that even the most daring and desperate criminal will not even try to commit a crime (Mustaine & Tewksbury, 1999). The Routine Activities Theory holds the premise that there are three factors that actually determine the crime and are the major agents that determine whether the crime is possible to commit or not, including such factors as, the presence of a likely offender, a suitable target and the absence of a capable guardian. The revelation of the key elements and activities involved in crime opens opportunities for the disruption of the chain of activities that result in a crime and, thus, minimize the risk of crimes. The revelation of “mechanics” of crimes helps to understand crimes better (Felson, 1995). Such approach reveals the essence of crimes, how they are committed rather than why. ![]() Instead, the Routine Activities Theory focuses on the process of crime, specific steps that offenders undertake to commit the crime, and what routine activities increase or decrease the risk of crime. ![]() The Routine Activity Theory is different from other criminology theories which focus on causes of crime and motivation of criminals that lead them to crimes. Therefore, the Routine Activities Theory offers a different explanation of crime because it focuses not on causes of crime but on the crime proper, including activities that are engaged when crimes are committed. The Routine Activities Theory emerged as an attempt to give a more detailed explanation to the mechanism of crimes and to study how crimes are committed. The Routine Activities Theory is the criminology theory that focuses on the study of crimes and activities that criminals and victims commit prior to crime and which actually result in the crime. At this point, it is possible to refer to the Routine Activities Theory which is different from other crime theories and offer a new, different perspective on crime, criminals, and victims. Today, criminology has multiple theories that open different perspectives on crime, why and how crimes occur. This is why understanding of the essence of crime and factors that trigger crimes or increase the risk of crimes is very important. Crime is a serious challenge not only to the individual safety but also to the public safety and social stability.
